Mike Nifong is the name of the DA who started the Duke lacrosse case. I have a lot of questions about the whole affair, but I will stick to the one that's been bothering me for a while:

What kind of name is Nifong???

I poked around in some records and found that the Nifongs have been in North Carolina for a long time. George Nifong, the DA's 4th great-grandfather, is on the 1790 census in Rowan County. George's father Balthasar came to Pennsylvania from Germany in 1748 with the last name Neufang. The name was quickly corrupted to Nifong (North Carolina branch) or Knifong (Missouri branch).

So you can see that the DA's name has been around for quite some time and is not just recently trumped up.

I don't know how I missed reporting this in January—the latest in a string of tombstone attacks where revenge was clearly the motive.
Police in Lilburn, Ga., were called to the cemetery adjacent to Luxomni Baptist Church at 2:40 a.m. one morning in January to investigate reports of a man screaming for about two hours. They found Ezekiel Dejesus-Rodriguez, 24, pinned under a gravestone (with a bloody, broken leg) and said he had apparently been knocking over headstones for fun until one fell on him.
Question: If you found a land reference and your ancestor was the mortgagor, would you know if that meant he borrowed the money or loaned the money?
If you said it "doesn't make any difference," you've got some learning to do ;-)
We'll post the answer in a few days.

Liverpool is celebrating its 800th birthday by seeking out the family with the deepest roots in the city.
Anyone living in Merseyside who can prove their family tree goes back further in Liverpool than anyone else will be invited, with three of their relatives, to take pride of place in a once-in-a-century procession through the city on 'Liverpool 800 Day' on August 28th.

Those who trace the earliest Liverpool-born ancestor will also earn the title of 'Liverpool's Oldest Family', as well as a fantastic heritage weekend in the city in October, which includes:

2 nights for family of four at Hard Days Night Hotel. The world's first Beatle's concept hotel. (Opens October 2007)

VIP tour of the prestigious Turner Prize exhibition at Tate Liverpool. After much consideration, I've decided to pass the honor along to five non-genealogical blogs that get my cerebral juices flowing.

Andrew Sullivan is gay, British, Catholic, and conservative—four terms which do not appear in my Match.com profile. But his is one of the few political blogs I read that produces more light than heat.

I've always been a visual learner. Back when I studied philosophy and my brain was still fully functional, I would sketch diagrams to help myself understand difficult concepts. Maybe that's why I enjoy indexed—Jessica Hagy's attempt to "make fun of some things and sense of others."

The right side of the brain needs attention, too. Lacking any artistic ability of my own, I visit Drawn! to wallow in self-pity. And, when finished, to appreciate the diverse talents of others.

Had I not gone to college to not become a philosophy professor, I would have gone to college to not become an economist. Freakonomics is the companion blog to the freakishly successful book, and never fails to stimulate my atrophied thinking muscles.

You may know John Hodgman as "PC" in those Apple commercials, or from his appearances on The Daily Show. Offscreen he is an accomplished author and humorist, and blogs at good evening. If you don't leave his blog confused, you will surely leave delighted. Here's a sample:
OF COURSE, shaking hands with a chimney sweep will not bring you luck. That is a myth perpetuated by Disney.

BUT NOT LONG AGO I consulted a contemporary, non-top-hatted chimney sweep who, EVEN THOUGH HE LOOKS LIKE A NORMAL, UN-COCKNEY HUMAN, told me he is constantly accosted by old women looking to touch him and thus ward off their horrible fates.

SPECIFICALLY, he said, women of Polish extraction want to pinch him as that is the custom for squeezing out good luck from a chimney sweep in that country.

I LAMENTED this unfortunate occupational hazard, and then I briefly throttled him. We all have our traditions.

That is all.

Automatic Source Citations & Zotero

A colleague just pointed me to zotero.org as an interesting approach to handling source citations. While they don't seem to have turned their attention toward genealogy, their approach looks promising for taking us closer to automatic source citations.

Zotero is an open source project sponsored by the Center for History and New Media at George Mason University. You install a plug-in to your browser and then when you're looking at something you want to cite you just click the icon in your address bar. It handles multiple citations on the same page, allows you to edit citations, add notes, attach files, take a snapshot of the content or just point to it. Check out their demo.

For this all to work the site needs to have the citation information available in a form that zotero understands. Rather than force you to use their specification their architecture allows you to create your own translator that maps your citation format to zotero and then it just works. I'd love to see some of the major online genealogical repositories invest the small amount of work required to support zotero. At the same time vendors of record managers and other family history applications could integrate with zotero and the automatic source citation problem is solved.

I've finished as much tuning as is required for this version. You won't be able to help but notice the significant performance improvement.

Now it's on to finally finish off the complete loading of the data. There are a couple of less used constructs that I still haven't tackled. The first is recursive links, which I talked about and was planning to do almost a year ago (see my April 26, 2006 blog entry), and the second is handling custom structures.

First onto the recursive links and we'll see how that goes.

As founder and president of DocuDirect, Berger says he can deliver documents at half the price of other companies.

"At DocuDirect we cut out the middleman, saving you both time and money," he explains. "I know the Archives, and it knows me. The former presidential advisor personally handles each request, wearing white gloves to avoid leaving fingerprints and clothing with extra-large pockets. Unlike other researchers who provide their clients with copies that are sometimes illegible, Berger delivers the original records.

"You'll receive your ancestor's actual Civil War pension record," he promises. "No matter how big the file is, you'll get every page—even if I have to stuff them in my socks."

Already fielding more requests than his small office can handle, Berger is planning to expand capacity once the fee hikes are implemented.

"I'm on the South Beach Diet," he confides. "I should be able to fit a half-dozen pension files in my pants come August."
It is being compiled from parish registers, transcripts of parish registers, wills, census returns, county histories, IGI and many other sources.

My original hope was to find 'my' Staleys and the origins of the name. Currently my aim is to provide a central finding aid for everyone interested in the name of Staley or any of the variant names which appear to have been derived from Staley, just as Staley appears to have been derived from the name of Staveley.

The database is a two-name study - Staley and Staveley - containing over 20,000 names and growing. The database is a finding tool only. If the information I send you seems to be what you are looking for, check it out against primary sources. I cannot emphasize this too strongly.

If you will send me a copy of your Staley family - names, dates, places, relationships - I will send you a free printout of whatever I may have which also relates to them. The more you send me, the better chance you have of finding what I have on your family."

You might have a brick wall if your difficult research problem is similar to the following.

At a recent conference a student showed me her family group record of a family she had trouble with for many years. Her ancestor, John WILLIAMS, was born in:

Woodstock, Windham County, Connecticut in 1712.

Because I too, had ancestors from the area, I knew immediately what the problem was. I quickly opened the AniMap software, plotted Woodstock on the map of Connecticut, and changed the year to 1712. Immediately, we knew why the brick wall had existed for so long.

In 1712, Woodstock was in a completely different county AND a completely different state!

Her family group record should have recorded his birth as:

Woodstock, Suffolk County, Massachusetts

Knowing the correct jurisdiction for the time period is vital to successful research. AniMap is the only software for the U.S. and Canada in which you can plot the place and see the changing county boundaries throughout time.

Watch a video of AniMap's features

Click here to view a brief introductory video of AniMap.

Purchase AniMap
